SUMMARY:Gretchen Peters
DESCRIPTION:Gretchen Peters \nFriday\, February 28\, 7:30-9pm\nThere’s a bittersweet beauty to the passing of time — the changes it brings are just as often heartbreaking as they are heartwarming. The inevitable tension that arises from that sway is Gretchen Peters’ most trusted muse. “The years go by like days. Sometimes the days go by like years. And I don’t know which one I hate the most\,” she sings in “Arguing with Ghosts\,” the hauntingly wistful opening cut on her new album\, Dancing with the Beast. \nBeauty tempered by dread\, sorrow buoyed by hope\, these are the ever-present tugs of war that make life worth living and songs worth writing. And they are the over-riding themes that make Gretchen Peters one of her generation’s most compelling singer/songwriters. \nTickets are 16 in advance\, 18 day of show

SUMMARY:Chris Koza
DESCRIPTION:January 18\, 2020\, 7:30 – 9:30pm\nChris Koza is a composer and performer based in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. Both solo and with his band Rogue Valley\, he has supported and shared the stage with artists such as Brandi Carlile\, Ingrid Michaelson\, The Jayhawks\, Neko Case\, Kathleen Edwards\, Dan Wilson\, Stephen Kellogg\, This is the Kit\, and Tift Merrit\, among others. His music appears regularly on ABCʼs General Hospital and 60 Minutes\, and his song “Be Wild” will be featured as the soundtrack to an upcoming State of Minnesota tourism campaign. His song (Rogue Valley) “The Wolves and the Ravens” was featured in Ben Stillerʼs film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. \nSleepwalkers Part 1 is Chrisʼs seventh solo release\, following Exit Pesce (2004)\, Patterns (2006)\, A Friend of a Friend EP (2006)\, The Dark Delirious Morning (2008)\, In Real Time (2014)\, and Beyond the Divide: A Film Soundtrack (2014). Additionally\, Chris has also released 5 albums with his band Rogue Valley and 2017ʼs electro-pop collection Off The Screen under the moniker Nobody Kid. \nIn addition to releasing and producing his own music\, Chris is also involved with other projects including performing with Minnesota-based artists The New Standards and Little Fevers. Chris also records and produces other artists\, most recently 2 EPs for buzzworthy rockers Early Eyes. \nThe music Chris produces is rooted in Americana but heeds its own spirit. Born out of folk\, country\, storytelling and rock ʼn roll\, Chris both honors and builds on Americana traditions by incorporating a unique pop-music sensibility\, subtle synthesizers\, rich harmonies\, and imaginative production choices. But despite late-night deep dives in the studio\, Chris never strays from the core of the song itself and isn’t afraid to let a raw vocal and woodsy acoustic guitar deliver the story. Chris performs solo\, as a duo\, and with a band of almost any other configuration. \n$13 in advance\, $15 at the door

SUMMARY:Big Little Lions
DESCRIPTION:Thursday November 21\, 7:30 pm\nBig Little Lions at Big River Theatre\nBig Little Lions are the award winning band from Cincinnati\, OH and British Columbia\, Canada. They were born out of a collaboration that won them a JUNO Award in 2014. Since then they have been cranking out infectious folk pop songs that are jam-packed with emotion and tight harmonies that sound like the product of two people working side-by-side instead of living in different countries. They have released 5 albums to date\, which have garnered them awards and nominations including the CFMA Ensemble of the Year. \nTheir live show is quite the spectacle with Paul playing drums\, bass and keyboard all while singing lead vocals. Helen\, who is no slacker either\, sings\, plays guitar and foot percussion. They use every limb\, and then some\, to make two people sound like a full band. \nTheir music has been dubbed ‘a blissful marriage of new folk and sophisticated pop’\, and is packed with emotion and tight harmonies. \nTickets  $13 in advance\, $15 at the door

SUMMARY:Brendan James live at Big River Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 19\, 7:30 pm\nBrendan James’ latest EP\, The Howl\, finds the singer-songwriter steering into new territory\, discovering the courage to release a brave new sound\, while staying respectful to his meaningful history and the depth of his lyric and message. \nFrom the opening declaration of “Bring My Love Home” to its conclusion\, it is clear James has out done even his own expectations. \nFor those who have followed Brendan James from his 2008 major label debut\, to his current ranking among today’s top troubadours; the journey has been a pretty remarkable one. \nBorn in New Hampshire\, schooled in Chapel Hill\, signed by Capitol Records by the age of 25\, and road tested with over 1\,000 shows to date\, James’ has certainly lived the troubadour life. His songs have landed spots on over 15 major television shows and feature films\, as well as achieving the #1 Singer Songwriter spot on iTunes\, multiple times. He has formed relationships with music legends Carly Simon and Cat Stevens\, enjoyed on stage experiences with the likes of John Legend\, John Mayer\, and Paula Cole\, and recently been asked to give a TedTalk on gun violence\, love songs\, and simpler societies. \nNow\, after 2 years of touring in support of his 2012 release\, Simplify\, James embarks on a new sound all together. His new EP\, The Howl\, set for release in the summer of 2015\, is bigger\, badder and dancier than anything he’s attempted to date. In his words\, ‘The Howl’ is “…a reflection of my years on the road\, my dreams broken and reformed\, and my growing addiction to the upbeat and the feel good.” \nHe chose the name after reading a review of his last album\, in which he was described as an artist holding back a howl. \nSo howl he will do. Bigger songs\, bigger shows\, and bigger goals. \nThe Howl is the bold next step in the evolution of an artist. \nThe musical journey of Brendan James continues… \nTickets $18 in advance and $20 at the door

SUMMARY:David Huckfelt with Savannah Smith
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 26 7:30 pm\nDavid Huckfelt with Savannah Smith\nIn the fall of 2017\, David Huckfelt left behind the familiar—the comfort of his home in Minneapolis; the camaraderie of his critically acclaimed band\, The Pines; the luxuries of heat\, hot water\, and electricity—and relocated to Isle Royale\, America’s most remote and least visited national park in mighty Lake Superior. Six hours by boat off the Michigan coast\, Isle Royale is the largest island in the world’s largest freshwater lake\, an isolated stretch of wilderness seemingly forgotten by the 20th century (to say nothing of the 21st). There\, as an Artist In Residence selected by the National Park Service\, Huckfelt spent ten hours a day for two straight weeks writing in solitude\, channeling the mysterious and lonesome island’s spirits into his stunning debut solo album\, ‘Stranger Angels.’ \nSavannah Smith’s debut full length album “LEO” is a dark and lush tribute to loss and the ripples it creates. Tucked away in a house built by her great-grandfather Leo\, Smith leaned heavily on the solitude of an empty house to hone in a new sound far from her first ukulele laden EP\, Leaving Eau Claire. Recorded and produced by Minneapolis’ Brett Bullion\, the two created a stormy soundscape for Smith’s earnest words and vocals. The coming together of simple\, swelling instrumentation and complex rhythms and samples make an evocative home for Smith’s songs \nTickets $18 in advance\, $20 at the door

SUMMARY:Pieta Brown
DESCRIPTION:Friday October 4\, 8pm\n“This record marks a major shift for me\,” says Pieta Brown. “The songs mirror so many transitions: in my musical life\, in my home life\, in my creative life\, in my country.  I’ve been hovering at a crossroads\, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.” \nRecorded at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio and co-produced by Bon Iver drummer and acclaimed solo artist S. Carey\, Brown’s lush new album\, Freeway\, is an utterly mesmerizing collection\, a delicate yet forceful reckoning with change that’s marked by the push and pull of unabashed intimacy and a slow-burning intensity. Brown cut the album live in just three days with an all-star band that included Carey\, bassist Mike Lewis (Bon Iver\, Andrew Bird)\, and guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker (Andrew Bird\, Alpha Consumer)\, and the resulting recordings reflect the foursome’s seemingly telepathic bond\, a deeply organic chemistry fueled by a shared passion for emotional exploration and sonic discovery. Due out this fall on Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records\, Freeway is Brown’s most experimental collection to date\, but it’s also her most confident and direct\, an honest accounting of bittersweet endings and hopeful beginnings\, of painful loss and traces of liberation in the aftermath\, all captured here with a raw spontaneity and fierce self-assurance. \n“When you’ve got a pile of songs and only a few days and nights in a studio\, you go into a hyper-focus\,” reflects Brown. “You lay all you’ve got on the line\, and that’s where a lot of the energy in this album comes from. We were all fully present in the moment with these songs\, and we recorded each of them in just a few takes.” \nThat approach stands in stark contrast to the way the Iowa native recorded her last album\, 2017’s Postcards. A sprawling release featuring remote collaborations with friends and mentors like Calexico\, David Lindley\, Mason Jennings\, and Carrie Rodriguez among others\, Postcards explored isolation and distance in the creative process\, with songs written alone in hotel rooms around the world and recorded piecemeal like an international game of telephone. This time around\, though\, Brown leaned into the power of human connection and physical presence. The players heard the songs for the first time in the studio\, forcing them to rely on their gut instincts and to react to the tunes (and each other) in real time. \n“The recording process was eye opening for me because it was so different from the way I’ve worked in the past\,” says Carey. “Pieta would just nail her vocal takes while she played live in the room with all of us\, and I’d say\, ‘How are you doing that?!’” \nHailed as a “self-styled poetess\, folk goddess and country waif” by the BBC\, Brown first came to international prominence with the release of her self-titled debut in 2002. Over the course of the ensuing decade-and-a-half\, she’s gone on to tour the US and Europe extensively and release another seven critically lauded records\, prompting NPR to applaud her “moody\, ethereal” songwriting\, and the New York Times to praise her “sweet\, smoky voice.” Perhaps even more importantly for an artist as fiercely independent as Brown\, her work continues to garner praise and support from a wide array of peers and mentors\, including legendary producer Don Was\, filmmaker Wim Wenders\, and Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon\, who called Brown’s 2014 album Paradise Outlaw his “favorite recording made at our studio.” In addition to the mountain of acclaim\, Brown’s music has also earned her co-writes with the likes of Iris Dement\, Amos Lee\, and Calexico; tour dates with an astonishing array of artists\, including John Prine\, Brandi Carlile\, Emmylou Harris\, JJ Cale\, Neko Case\, Richard Thompson\, Ani DiFranco\, Mavis Staples\, and Iris Dement; and festival slots everywhere from Bonnaroo to Mountain Jam. \nWhile music has always been in Brown’s blood (her father is the beloved Midwestern folksinger Greg Brown)\, she decided to embark on something of a bold new chapter after Postcards\, relocating to Europe for the better part of a year in order to star in her first feature film as an actress. \n“Acting turned out to be a great detour for me\,” explains Brown. “Playing the lead role in a foreign language film challenged me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Everything was in French\, but the character I played was a singer\, which made for some interesting parallels with my own life. I collaborated on the music for the film\, too\, and the whole experience is still opening new channels for me.” \nAs one chapter was beginning abroad\, Brown found herself grappling with major shifts on the home front\, both professionally and personally. \n“I was in a pretty fragile state of mind when I came in to the studio\, but the guys in the band were the most perfect and open shelter I could have asked for\,” says Brown. “They’re all true musicians. They were extremely sensitive and really listening so that an open conversation was able to form without any words exchanged.” \nThat musical conversation begins with the ethereal album opener “Ask For More\,” a gentle\, tender tune that contemplates our simultaneous resilience and insignificance in the grand scheme of the universe. Brown draws much of her language here\, and on the album as a whole\, from the natural world\, frequently invoking images of the sea\, the sun\, forests\, fire\, and water. \n“Nature is a major player on the album\,” explains Brown. “We had a microphone going outside the whole time capturing the sounds of the woods while we worked in the studio. It created a sense of anti-isolation for us. The record starts with those sounds and they’re woven throughout the tracks really subtly. \nSubtlety is one of Brown’s specialties\, both as a songwriter and a producer. While she called on the band to experiment with her pop sensibilities for the project\, her music has long been defined by nuance and incremental change\, slight evolutions in arrangement that grow into seismic shifts over time. On the new album\, keyboards hinting at hip-hop and R&B influences come and go like the breeze\, layered harmonies drift in and out like the tide\, and images—of war\, violence\, liberation\, shelter—flash by like scenes through the car window. The songs are alive\, breathing\, always in flux and constantly in motion. The driving “Morning Fire” finds love even in the ashes of despair (“In the smog of apocalypse / I reach for you as the horizon slips\,” she sings)\, while the cinematic “Only Flying” finds a fresh start in a sorrowful farewell\, and the infectious “The Hard Way” (which features a guest appearance by Mark Knopfler) reflects on the growth that comes from pain. \nIn the end\, Freeway is all about that emotional alchemy\, that intangible magic that transforms our ache into understanding and our doubt into belief. The initial seeds for many of the songs came to Brown in dreams\, and it’s easy to hear that otherworldly quality in her delivery. She sings with grit and grace in a raw and all-encompassing voice that seems to flow effortlessly from within\, a bubbling spring of feminine strength that celebrates the beauty in our brokenness. “If music is love\, we’ll have enough\,” she sings on “Bring Me\,” and truer words have never been spoken. \n

SUMMARY:Beth Bombara
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 14 7:30pm\nBeth Bombara’s album Evergreen began thousands of feet above sea level. Looking to step back and clear her head after a long bout of touring\, the rock & roll-influenced Americana artist nestled herself in the Rocky Mountains in a remote cabin. The cabin’s name? Evergreen. She spent time wandering through acres and acres of untouched forest around the cabin\, up and down craggy rocks that felt nothing like her native Michigan nor her adopted home of St. Louis. Almost by accident\, songs for her sixth album began to take root. “I wasn’t writing a new record — at least\, I didn’t think I was at the time\,” she admits. “But I’m starting to realize\, that’s just what I do. I write songs. You know how trees exhale oxygen? They don’t think too hard about oxygen…it’s just a byproduct of their existence. Well\, songs are a byproduct of my existence. I’ve already exhaled these songs\, but maybe they’re a needed breath for someone else. And the idea that even one other person needs them is what fulfills me.” \nAlthough based in Missouri\, Bombara has spent much of her adulthood on the road\, carving out her own award-winning mix of vintage folk and electric roots-rock. She’s been a solo artist\, a bandleader\, and an occasional side musician for other artists. With Evergreen\, Bombara resumes her role as the leader of an amplified Americana band. These songs were largely written on the run — in friend’s basements\, during soundchecks\, and on the road — while Bombara and company toured the country in support of her 2017 release\, Map and No Direction. As a result\, there’s a strong sense of movement here\, from Samuel Gregg’s versatile guitar playing to the thump of the group’s rhythm section (featuring Mike Schurk on drums and Kit Hamon — Bombara’s right-hand man and longtime collaborator — on bass). Gluing the sound together are Bombara’s unforced vocals\, sharp hooks\, and optimistic lyrics\, which find her taking an honest look at life’s difficulties while continuing to move forward with positivity. “Getting to work these songs out on the road was invigorating\,” says the songwriter\, who’d previously recorded Map and No Direction with a small\, insu lar team consisting of Hamon and co-producer Karl Kling. “So I already feel invincible with my touring band\, and then my friend John Calvin Abney joined in on keys (and production). The five of us just walked in to the studio\, set up in one live room\, and hammered out the whole album in less than a week. It was the most fun I’ve ever had making a record. Everyone’s doing what they do…it just felt effortless.” \nFrom Tom Petty’s heartland rock & roll to Aimee Mann’s quirky indie-folk\, Evergreen sources its inspiration from iconic sources. Even so\, this is the unmistakably unique work of Beth Bombara\, a singer/songwriter who\, over a half-dozen albums\, has nodded to past traditions while always pushing ahead into new territory. Evergreen is her newest high-water mark: an album that matches her craft with the nuanced stomp of her strongest band to date

SUMMARY:Jeff Arundel and Billy McLaughlin
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 29: 7:30 -9:00 pm\nJeff Arundel and Billy McLaughlin\nBilly McLaughlin \nRecognized internationally as a world-class guitarist\, Emmy Award winning composer and inspirational keynote speaker who has appeared on Billboard’s Top-Ten Chart. Previously signed to Virgin Records’ Narada label\, McLaughlin has 14 CD releases\, 3 National Campus Entertainer of the Year Awards*\, 5 Minnesota Music Awards and his decades of national concert touring earned him the Hall of Fame Achievement Award*. But in 1999 McLaughlin vanished from sight as his career crumbled due to a little-known neuro-muscular disorder called Focal Dystonia. After suffering several years without a cure or even a diagnosis\, this right-handed guitarist embarked on an unlikely attempt to regain his career by re-learning his instrument….left-handed! His remarkable comeback is captured in the independent documentary film Changing Keys (seen on PBS stations in 2010) and a concert film called Coming Back Alive featuring McLaughlin with string orchestra and a reunion of his longtime rock band. KPBS (San Diego) produced the 2013 Emmy Award winning live concert program called Starry Night – Billy McLaughlin with Orchestra Nova highlighting McLaughlin’s extraordinary talent as both guitarist and inspirational speaker. Now serving as Ambassador for Awareness for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation\, McLaughlin is the winner of the 2010 Public Leadership in Neurology Award** whose previous winners include Paul Allen\, Julie Andrews\, Leon Fleischer\, and Michael J. Fox. McLaughlin has resumed an international schedule of concert appearances and keynote speaking. He resides in his home state of Minnesota where he is proudly raising two boys. \nJeff Arundel \nJeff Arundel has mounted stages both tiny and large for forty years\, singing wistful songs of romance\, and funky stuff that belies his true wish to be Bill Withers. He has released seven records of (largely) original music\, and in 2019 will release an eighth\, called “Now We Go”. Jeff has won awards\, been featured on various compilations\, opened for Big Artists\, and has traveled the world as a singer-songwriter\, as a producer\, and as a music director. He also founded the ground-breaking Lifestyle music label “Lifescapes” and was a co-founder of Compass Entertainment\, at one time the Midwest’s largest independent concert promoter. Jeff performs with his band “The Hammsmen”\, sometimes called “the most sensitive band in North America”. He regularly plays the Midwest\, often with his lifetime musical brother Billy McLaughlin. Nostalgic\, emotional\, wistful\, funny\, edgier than you’d think\, and maybe Better Than Ever. Now We Go! \nTickets $12 in advance – $15 door
