SUMMARY:Lone Piñon
DESCRIPTION:We are THRILLED to welcome Lone Piñon to Big River Theatre Wednesday\, July 24th at 7pm. \nTickets: $17 advance/$20 day of show \n  \nMeet the band: \nLone Piñon is a New Mexican string band\, or “orquesta típica”\, whose music celebrates the integrity and diversity of their region’s cultural roots. With fiddles\, upright bass\, guitars\, accordions\, vihuela\, and bilingual vocals\, they play a wide spectrum of the traditional music that is at home in New Mexico. \nThe Norte has long been a crossroads of cultures\, and centuries of intersecting histories\, trade routes\, migrations\, and cultural movements have endowed the region with an expansive and rich musical heritage that weaves together Spanish\, Mexican\, Indigenous\, European immigrant\, Anglo-American\, and Afro-American musical influences. The oldest strands of this tradition have survived in continuity\, renewed by each new generation’s contribution to core style and repertoire that has been passed from musician to musician\, in some cases over many centuries.  Though rapid cultural change since the ‘50s has led to these sounds becoming scarce in their home territory\, they never fully disappeared–thanks to the elders and past generations that lovingly and tenaciously carried them forward\, renewing the voice of their musical ancestors at each step into changing circumstances. \nThe musicians of Lone Piñon learned from elder musicians who instilled in them a respect for continuity and an example of the radicalism\, creativity\, and cross-cultural solidarity that has always been necessary for musical traditions to adapt and thrive in each generation.  In 2014\, Lone Piñon was founded as a platform for creativity around the oldest sounds of traditional New Mexico string music\, sounds that had all but disappeared from daily life in many Northern New Mexico communities.  Through relationship with elders\, study of field recordings\, connections to parallel traditional music and dance revitalization movements in the US and Mexico\, and hundreds of local and national performances\, they have brought the language of the New Mexico orquesta típica back onto the modern stage\, back onto dance floors\, into a contemporary aesthetic/artistic conversation\, and into the ears of a young generation. \nThe musical landscape of Northern New Mexico bears the record of interconnecting musical movements that cross state\, national\, generational\, and ethnic borders. Lone Piñon’s active and recorded repertoire reflects that complexity\, and has included a wide range of regionally-relevant material (Western swing\, conjunto\, New Mexican Spanish and Mexican ranchera\, Central Mexican son regional\, country\, onda chicana\, etc.) around the core New Mexican violin and accordion-driven polkas\, cunas\, inditas\, valses\, and chotes learned from elders.

SUMMARY:Eli Lev
DESCRIPTION:Singer-Songwriter Eli Lev joins us at Big River Theatre Friday\, June 7th at 7pm! \nDoors:6:30 \nShow: 7:00pm \nTickets: $13 advance/$15 day of show \n  \nMeet Eli: \nRising singer-songwriter Eli Lev is making the world a smaller place\, one song at a time. Eli pens lyrics and melodies for everyday enlightenment—songs that resonate because they’re heartfelt\, earthy\, and offer the wisdom he’s gained through lifelong travel and self-discovery. The Maryland-based artist has just completed his epic Four Directions project which includes four EPs that were inspired by indigenous traditions he learned while teaching on the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona. His four part EP releases\, All Roads East (2017) and Way out West (2018)\, Deep South (2019)\, and True North (2021) – imaginatively and intrepidly connect spheres and generations within a body of work that is irresistibly uplifting\, emotionally resonant\, and down-to-earth. A cross between The Avett Brothers and The Lumineers\, Lev has opened for both Shooter Jennings and Lee DeWyze\, performed at The Kennedy Center and 9:30 Club in Washington\, DC\, and toured extensively around the world. \n“Eli‘s original\, spirit-filled lyrics become familiar and make you want to join in signing\, clapping\, and dancing as soon as he starts singing. Sweet voice. Kind soul.” – Rhonda Brown\n“His music is inspiring yet raw at the same time. He makes you close your eyes and just imagine there is nothing going on at all. I really enjoy his music and the other musicians that he collaborated with.” – April Watson \n  \nCheck him out: \n\n  \nhttps://elilevmusic.bandcamp.com/album/four-directions \n

SUMMARY:Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Nichols joins us at Big River Theatre Friday\, May 3!\nyou’re not going to want to miss this one\, folks. \nDoors: 6:30 \nShow: 7pm \nTickets: $20/$25 \nOn his second album\, The Fatalist\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols does things with the blues that might catch you off guard. There’s 808 programming\, chopped up Charley Patton samples\, washes of synth. There’s a consideration of the fullness of the sonic stage and the atmospherics of the music that can only come with a long engagement with electronic music. But this is no gimmicky hybrid or attempt to turn the blues into 21st century music by simply dressing it with skittering hi-hats. Nichols’ vision for the blues is of a form of music that’s intimately tied to everyday life in 2023\, something that’s reflected not only in the choice of instrumentation\, but in the complexities of the songwriting and the gray areas his lyrics explore. This is music that comes straight from the present\, and as such\, it’s a reminder that the same shit that drove the first blues singers to pick up a guitar is still present behind the throbs of deep bass hits today. The Fatalistsounds unlike any blues record you’re likely to hear in 2023. \n  \nCheck him out:

The Neighborhood Quartet might just take you back to those times with their groovy 70’s theme song inspired tunes\, but sorry Rondo is long gone\, but I’m sure you will find something from the bar to crush your thirst! \nThe quartet’s unique instrumentation brings a sound that is ethereal and groovy. They blend pop and soul influences with roots and jazz to bring a fresh take on tunes that fit perfectly with whatever you are drinking. \nCheck out their latest video:

SUMMARY:Tennessee Stiffs
DESCRIPTION:Tennessee Stiffs of Red Wing\, MN will be joining us Saturday\, March 2nd at 7pm! \nDoors: 6:30 \nShow: 7:00pm \nTickets: $13 advance/$15 day of show \nMeet The Stiffs: \nThe Stiffs—who hail not from the Volunteer State but that other roots-music Mecca\, Austin\, TX—dip their bucket deep into the well of American music. Warped lo-fi folk gives way to frenetic honky-tonk riff rock and gutbucket country; forlorn Americana anthems resound off Texas hillsides\, and blazing Southern rock screeches like tires on the last lap of a cup-winning speedway run. Formed in late 2011 and fueled by their eclectic musical interests\, co-founders-turned-married-couple Ethan Lee and Cara B were determined to create something never heard before.Cara’s melodies range from hauntingly beautiful to wildly soulful. Blended with Lee’s foot-stomping rhythms and gravelly vocals\, the two take the “Beauty and the Beast” standard to heart. In the beginning\, the duo spent their time writing tunes and performing intimate shows\, often using old books and a hat containing lines of poetry as inspiration. Each song’s characters are vividly constructed and personal\, allowing for the listener to relate. For many years\, they performed and toured as a five piece featuring Austin musicians\, meandering onto live radio shows\, podcasts and were featured in several music festivals. In 2022\, the release of the highly anticipated third album\, a concept collection called “Dearly Departed” goes deeper still\, dredging up minor-key Southern-gothic circus waltzes\, spaghetti-Western vampire shuffles\, and the kind of fuzz-drenched blues you’d hear wafting from a Detroit garage. The album picked up PR with Glide Magazine\, Parade Magazine\, Americana UK and Ditty TV to name a few.Fast forward to 2023\, Cara and Lee sold the band van and re-located to Red Wing MN\, continuing their musical endeavor as a duo/trio with local percussionist and vocalist Jake Ricks. They’ve been featured on The Current\, and continue to make their way around the region with sway.
