Sculpted by bitter winters and blistering summers\, it is home to a multitude of wildlife and a rare breed of people – the ‘River Rats’. The lives of these people are intricately bound to the ebb and flow of the river. Seen through the eyes of the celebrated last river rat\, Kenny Salwey\, this film explores the challenge to survive that every animal faces as the Mississippi meanders its way through four extremely defined seasons. \n  \nCheck out this interview with Kenny Salwey: \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tennessee Stiffs
DESCRIPTION:They’re back!! It’s the Tennessee Stiffs\, coming back this year as a full band. Outfitted with mandolins\, guitars\, bass drums\, cool microphones and electric energy\, “the Stiffs” make their way from Red Wing to Alma Friday\, February 28th at 7pm. \n  \nFriday\, February 28th \nDoors: 6:30pm \nShow: 7pm \nTickets: $15advance/$20 day of show \n  \nMeet The Stiffs: \nThe Stiffs—who hail not from the Volunteer State but that other roots-music Mecca\, Austin\, TX—dip their bucket deep into the well of American music. Warped lo-fi folk gives way to frenetic honky-tonk riff rock and gutbucket country; forlorn Americana anthems resound off Texas hillsides\, and blazing Southern rock screeches like tires on the last lap of a cup-winning speedway run. Their third and most recent double concept album goes deeper still\, dredging up minor-key Southern-gothic circus waltzes\, spaghetti-Western vampire shuffles\, and the kind of fuzz-drenched blues you’d hear wafting from a Detroit garage. \nFormed in late 2011 and fueled by their eclectic musical interests\, co-founders-turned-married-couple Ethan Lee and Cara B were determined to create something never heard before. \nCara’s melodies range from hauntingly beautiful to wildly soulful. Blended with Lee’s foot-stomping rhythms and gravelly vocals\, the two take the “Beauty and the Beast” standard to heart. \nAfter recording the debut album\, “Nightery\,” in April 2015\, the Stiffs garnered attention from all over the United States. The Akademia Music Awards gave “Nightery” the Best Americana Album Award. Keeping up the momentum\, the Stiffs toured again in ‘18 and ‘19 promoting the sophomore album\, “Thirty Pieces.” The waves propelled them to perform at the likes of Wildwood Festival and Salem Arts Festival in Oregon\, Taos Mesa Mothership\, and were featured on podcasts and live radio premieres in Nashville and Knoxville TN. \nIn 2022\, the release of the highly anticipated third album\, a concept collection called “Dearly Departed”\, picked up some PR with Glide agazine\, Parade Magazine\, Americana UK and more. \nFast forward to 2023\, Cara and Lee have re-located to Red Wing MN\,  continuing their musical endeavor with locals Jake Ricks and Adam Olson. They’ve been featured on The Current\, and are making their way around the region with sway. \nCheck out their song “Josephine” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxq_nNeZiZA

SUMMARY:Taylor James Donskey + Sarah Morris
DESCRIPTION:Our excellent night of music coming up featuring La Crosse native Taylor James Donskey and the effervescent Sarah Morris has been RESCHEDULED for February 7th\, 2025. \n  \nMeet the artists: \nTaylor James Donskey is a lover and writer of songs. Although he has become known for his work as a sideman (bass\, vocals\, trumpet\, trombone\, percussion)\, Donskey considers himself a songwriter and band leader ahead of all else. \nAbsorbing the sounds of the many bands he’s played in (I Like You\, The Lowland Lakers\, Lena Elizabeth\, The Gentlemen’s Anti-Temperance League\, Mississippi Hot Club)\, Donskey has carved a unique spot for himself in the Twin Cities music scene that includes elements of pop\, bluegrass\, folk\, and jazz. \nRaised in La Crosse\, Wisconsin and influenced by his time in the Driftless Region\, he picked up the bass at 14 and began his life as a sideman. He played in pop-punk bands and school jazz combos. He sang in choirs and played trumpet\, trombone\, percussion\, and most importantly\, the bass. This led him to playing paid gigs in high school\, sitting in with his uncle’s cover band. “I had to learn nearly two hours of rock cover songs\,” Donskey says. Playing music by Bowie\, Petty\, Harrison\, and McCartney left its mark. “A lot of that music had incredible bass lines like I’d never really heard. It really inspired me.” \nRecognizing his talent\, his uncle gave him a Sigma acoustic guitar. “He bought it in the seventies\, and I’ve continued to play it. A relentless old companion\, it has followed me wherever I go\, and it is the instrument from which many of my songs have grown.” Taking that big leap into the spotlight\, Taylor James Donskey emerges from his supporting role with Paper Over It\, a sophisticated debut\, showcasing his strong songwriting skills and prowess as an arranger and producer. \nWhen not busy performing his own music or touring in Lena Elizabeth’s band\, he teaches ukulele\, piano\, electric bass\, upright bass\, guitar\, songwriting\, music theory\, and voice. “Teaching is my second great joy\,” he says. “I’ve learned how to translate the language of music so that people may experience it in their own way.” \n  \nSarah Morris has a habit of missing the forest. From the day the Minneapolis based singer-songwriter picked up a guitar\, armed with the bone-deep memory of her parents’ well-loved record collection and rooted in the storytelling fire of a Mary Chapin Carpenter tune\, she’s been too busy crafting love letters to the details of the trees. Sarah’s endearingly honest\, expertly penned songs encourage audiences to pull away from the big picture and get caught up in the magic of our everyday minutia\, the rainy day ache in her sunlit voice granting us permission to escape into stories at once hauntingly familiar and uniquely her own. \nA graduate of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music\, Sarah spent the first years of her career in Nashville\, losing herself in the art of writing timeless Americana melodies. “Sarah Morris [is] a bright\, clear\, brilliant songwriter\,” wrote Jon Hunt of L’Etoile Magazine. “…pure and crisp and perfect.” In the eight years since her 2011 debut album\, Lonely or Free\, Sarah’s career\, like her songs\, has been overflowing with delicious details. Her albums Ordinary Things (2015)\, Hearts in Need of Repair (2017)\, and All Mine (2020) recorded with band mates Thomas Nordlund\, Andrew Foreman\, and Lars-Erik Larson with producer Eric Blomquist\, earned international airplay and considerable critical acclaim\, reaching notable positions on both the Americana Music Association and Euro Americana charts. In 2016\, Sarah was a top four finalist in the NewSong Music Contest at Lincoln Center in New York City\, 2nd place winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition at MerleFest in Wilkesboro\, NC\, and an Americana semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. In 2018\, she went on to win the Kerrville New Folk Competition\, collecting an honorable mention at the Telluride Troubadour contest along the way.  More recently\, Sarah was named Midwest Country Music Organization’s Songwriter of the Year for the second time. \n“Rootsy singer Sarah Morris offers a Norah Jones-like approach to Americana\, smoothing overs its rough edges with a butter-velvety voice and an intimate songwriting style.”  Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune. \nInclined toward the intimacy of live performance\, Sarah spends a remarkable amount of time on stage. Whether solo\, backed by the country kick of her long-time band The Sometimes Guys (Nordlund\, Foreman\, and Lars-Erik Larson)\, as half of vintage-harmony heavy duo The Home Fires with Vicky Emerson\, or hosting local and traveling musicians live online from her big green bathroom\, her playful-hearted presence is both captivating and contagious. Amidst her steady performance schedule she has opened for greats like JD Souther\, Suzy Bogguss\, and Teddy Thompson – she’s had plenty of beautiful moments to revel in. And with a brand new album to share in 2023\, she’s primed to offer us a few beautiful moments of our own. \nDeeply committed to the Twin Cities’ life-giving music community\, Morris hosts an online interview program called\, “Hey\, I Miss You\,” to amplify the work of her peers\, as well as collaborating with musicians for a Youtube series of under-rehearsed cover songs filmed in her laurel green bathroom. Additionally\, Morris is head cheerleader for a local songwriting collective. \nAs a writer\, lover\, mother\, and witness\, Morris invites us to join her in missing the forest for the trees\, with songs that count and celebrate the glorious details of our messy\, magical\, everyday lives. \n

SUMMARY:Luke Callen & Michael Gay Song Swap
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, January 10th for a song swap featuring Luke Callen and Michael Gay! \n  \nShow: 7pm \nTickets: $13 advance/$15 day of show \n  \nMeet Luke: In an age of quick fixes\, flashing screens\, and pop ‘songs’ that are more formula than art\, an album that takes its sweet time is a radical act. “Also Going Nowhere”\, Luke Callen’s third full-length effort is just that – a collection of songs that spread out through time and space\, dripping with honest Midwest charm and a mischievous glint. It’s music that you can relax into\, paired with lyrics you’ll want to chew on and savor\, that ask something of their listener. These songs are proof and reminder: you don’t actually have to go anywhere at all to\, you know\, get somewhere. \n\n\n  \nMeet Michael: \nMichael Gay is a Minneapolis-based country folk storyteller. Starting off as a drummer and finding his way to guitar\, he was inspired by the singer-songwriters of his dad’s generation–Willie Nelson\, John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker. \n “I dove into that world head-first\,” Michael says. “I love thrift stores\, and I’d just buy whatever I could find for a dollar or two that had a name on it I recognized. 70’s singer-songwriters and outlaw country was kinda what got the wheels turning because it was cheap/free at the time. But my dad’s record collection is where it started to come together for me.” \n Born in Denver and raised in Rochester\, MN\, Michael studied history at the University of Minnesota with the intention of teaching high school social studies until he moved to Minneapolis’ vibrant NE neighborhood and was drawn to the bands and songwriters playing corner bars like the 331 Club. He was hooked. \nMichael quickly established his place among the Twin Cities’ finest Americana artists while releasing music under the moniker\, Almighty American\, winning fans and media praise for his honest\, accessible songwriting. “Bus Brakes\,” the single from Almighty American’s first full-length album Somewhere Ride (2017) was featured on The Current\, drew comparisons to Jason Isbell and Boxcar Willie and was hailed as “the real deal” (Ear to the Ground Music). A magnetic presence on stage\, Michael has opened up for such acts as Margo Price\, The Mavericks\, Kacy & Clayton\, Emily Scott Robinson and more. \n Going from a full band to a more stripped-down sound\, Michael Gay started performing under his own name in 2020\, right around the time he started recording his new album in Nashville. Coming out of those sessions with more than enough for an album\, he released the single “Long\, Cold Winter” — “a song that brings to mind John Prine\, both through its sound and its wry\, witty lyrics” (Americana UK). Released with the B-side “Good Night\,” the track made a splash on folk and Americana radio. Now\, with the release of his full-length album Make It Right (June 18\, 2021)\, he solidifies his place as one of the young songwriters to watch. Produced by John James Tourville and mixed/mastered by Paul Oldham\, the album evokes the heartfelt storytelling of Guy Clark and the layered musical sensibility of Josh Ritter. \nIn the spring of 2023\, he and his band (now consisting of Daniel Stewart on Bass\, Matt Decker on Drums\, and AJ Srubas on Pedal Steel) filmed and recorded the last show of a monthly residency at The Terminal Bar in NE Minneapolis. The result was a live album- “Michael Gay & His Dang Band: Live from a Dive” released in March of 2024. The full album’s live performance is available to watch on Youtube and the audio is available to stream in digital album format on all major streaming platforms. \n\n

SUMMARY:Kelley Smith + Kelly Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a double whammy Kelley Smith and Kelly Hunt show! \nMeet Kelly Smith: \nAmerican singer-songwriter Kelley Smith is a hopeless romantic who fancies old poetry and grandpa sweaters. All at once whimsical and haunting\, Smith delivers deeply affecting lyrics with wry charm and a time traveler’s voice. Prone to melancholy and daydreaming\, Kelley spent her childhood roaming the woods of Minnesota and singing to forest animals. To this day\, her longing for that landscape runs deep and seems to find its way into her songs in one way or another. \nRaised by musicians\, Smith always had music in her bones\, but it wasn’t until she was 40 and a mother of four that her first record\, Moon Child (2022)\, came to be. As an insomniac\, she wrote this first batch of songs by moonlight. They evoke a sense of belonging\, juxtaposed with escapism\, as she croons about long-term love\, grief\, and her draw to the night sky. ”Her authentic\, rootsy sound\, falling somewhere between country\, folk\, bluegrass and old-time music\, is a pitch-perfect vehicle for the themes she explores…” – Adventures in Americana \nSince 2022\, Kelley has been lucky to share stages with the likes of Charlie Parr\, Dave Simonett\, Wild Horses\, Drew Peterson\, Erik Koskinen\, Storyhill\, Good Morning Bedlam\, Tina Schlieske\, Molly Maher\, Sarah Morris\, and more. Often performing solo or as a duo\, Smith interprets old-time folk songs on guitar and banjo\, in addition to her original music. \nListen to Kelley’s music here! \n  \nMeet Kelly Hunt: \nMemphis-raised singer-songwriter Kelly Hunt paints stories as old and offbeat as her Depression-era tenor banjo\, reimagining traditions of folk\, blues & old-time music in a timeless style that hovers beyond the constraints of genre à la Anaïs Mitchell & Gillian Welch. Hunt’s debut album\, Even The Sparrow\, was released in May 2019 and named as a finalist for the International Folk Music Awards “Album of the Year.” Her sophomore album\, Ozark Symphony\, was recorded with Grammy-winning musician & producer Dirk Powell and released on Compass Records in October 2023. Kelly has toured nationally and internationally since 2018 and has opened for the likes of Josh Ritter\, Pokey LaFarge\, Sarah Harmer\, John McCutheon\, and The Gibson Brothers. \nListen to Kelly’s music here!  \n  \nSaturday\, November 23rd at 7pm\nTickets: $15 advance/$18 day of show\nDoors: 6:30\nShow: 7pm
